Google integrated SmartReply into YouTUbe just recently, allowing YouTubers to reply to their comments without having to go through the tedious process of doing it manually.

It so happens that some YouTube videos get flooded with comments, and it becomes tough for the creator to reply to all of them. Google wants to ease the process out and take a shot at automatic AI integrated replies to help creators.

What is SmartReply?

SmartReply was already enabled for Gmail, Android Messages, Android,  the Play Developer console. However, Google decided to integrate it within YouTube as well. SmartReply allows the user to respond to emails, and other messages by suggesting replies that the user can respond with.

It was released four years ago, and today it is present on YouTube as well. Creators who have YouTube Studio need not go through the laborious process of reading the comments and replying to them anymore.

They can just click on the comment and SmartReply shall give relevant suggestions to help respond to them.

How is Smart is SmartReply for YouTube?

Unlike the functionalities of SmartReply in other apps such as Gmail, SmartReply is going to suggest a quite an informal and more relevant set of replies for YouTube.

It can function in two languages, that is English and Spanish.

It has a set of generic replies like “Thank you so much!” and “Will come out with new videos soon,” and so forth. Also, Google made it a point to keep the language up to date with the commonly used terms these days.

It has kept the tone informal and casual, with meager focus on grammatical correctness and other such parameters. So, whenever you use SmartReply to reply to your fans, you won’t come off as a bot!

It Only Responds to Comments You’re Likely to Respond to!

Also, Google made it a point to train the AI for YouTube in such a way, so that it can detect emojis, and will only suggest features when the creator is highly likely to respond to the particular comment, that too with a sensible reply.

The SmartReply AI can detect such comments and trigger suitable responses.

In Google’s recent blog post, Rami-Al Rofu, Google’s research scientist says “Our goal is to help creators, so we have to make sure that SmartReply only makes suggestions when it is very likely to be useful.”

“Ideally, suggestions would only be displayed when it is likely that the creator would reply to the comment and when the model has a high chance of providing a sensible and specific response.”

How Many Languages Can SmartReply Reply In?

Instead of devising a separate AI model for each language, Google decided to devise a single cross-lingual model for all supported languages.

This allowed the use of mixed languages in one go, and help the model leverage the learning of common elements in one language to understand the other.

Moreover, having just one single model simplifies the hassles of multiple model maintenance and updates. For the time being, it’s only available in Spanish and English.

What’s New?

Coinciding with SmartReply, Google also began rolling out a feature called SmartCompose. It is an AI-powered feature that suggests words that might follow whatever you’ve typed.

It is supposed to roll out in Gboard beta, however, it was already in use in Android Messages. It is now supposed to appear in WhatsApp, Telegram and Google Messages.
