The world’s pacing fast and technology is making huge leaps towards development, and the United States just decided to justify the same. The United States Army is developing a conversational AI that will be capable of giving commands to soldiers.

The developing Joint Understanding and Dialogue Interface or JUDI will be able to understand the motives or intent behind the order and will revert back to questions accordingly.

What is JUDI?

The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s Army Research Laboratory is building this interactional AI in collaboration with the University of Southern California’s Institute for Creative Technologies.

The main mission they are working towards is that they want to make JUDI such that it understands colloquial language, and understand the intent of its orders.

How Does JUDI work?

From all the news and information that we have gandered by now, here’s how it works. Presently, miniature cars integrated with JUDI are in their development stage.

If an order such as “Go on top of the hill” is given, the car scans the nearby surroundings with the help of its camera. It then spots a nearby hill (if any) and climbs on top of it, using natural language processing.

It then awaits further commands or orders.

Dr. Matthews, one of the researchers said in a statement, “Dialogue will be a critical capability for autonomous systems operating across multiple echelons of Multi-Domain Operations so that Soldiers across land, air, sea and information spaces can maintain situational awareness on the battlefield.

This technology enables a Soldier to interact with autonomous systems through bidirectional speech and dialogue in tactical operations where verbal task instructions can be used for command and control of a mobile robot.

In turn, the technology gives the robot the ability to ask for clarification or provide status updates as tasks are completed. Instead of relying on pre-specified, and possibly outdated, information about a mission, dialogue enables these systems to supplement their understanding of the world by conversing with human teammates.”

What Makes JUDI have an upper hand?

According to the US army, they said that conversational AI integrated robots reacting to voice commands will be way more aware of the surroundings than the ordinary man.

The soldiers commanding them around will be able to multifunction with the help of voice, and the whole process will be much more convenient than the present joystick-based controls.

From all this information, we can only say that the JUDI is akin to pre-existent voice assistants, like Google Assistant, Apple’s Siri, and Amazon’s Alexa. The biggest difference is probably that other brands use the cloud to store and process their data whenever needed.

JUDI, on the other hand, relies on the available physical data and real-time commands to carry out its orders.

Marge said in a statement, “Our ultimate goal is to enable Soldiers to more easily team with autonomous systems so they can more effectively and safely complete missions, especially in scenarios like reconnaissance and search-and-rescue. It will be extremely gratifying to know that Soldiers can have more accessible interfaces to autonomous systems that can scale and easily adapt to mission contexts.”

Are Humans Ringing Their Own Knell?

But the point here is – how far is the world willing to take this? Recently, news surged that Russia is also trying to incorporate AI to build potentially harmful weapons. We have integrated AI into almost everything – smart homes, smartphones, and smart speakers. But the question is, how smart is too smart? Are humans really ringing their own death bell by giving way to rising technologies?
